Special Marine Warning issued September 16 at 9:06AM EDT expiring September 16 at 10:00AM EDT by NWS Wilmington NC

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a special marine warning for Coastal waters from Little River Inlet to Murrells Inlet SC out 20 nm; Coastal waters from Murrells Inlet to South Santee River SC out 20 nm; Coastal waters from Cape Fear NC to Little River Inlet SC out 20 nm; Waters from Little River Inlet to Murrells Inlet SC from 20 to 40 nm; Waters from Murrells Inlet NC to South Santee River SC from 20 to 40 nm starting on 9/16/2018 6:06:00 AM. NWS estimates this event is ‘likely’ to happen and the event is categorized as ‘severe.’

The best action to take according to The National Weather Service is to avoid the area. Thunderstorms can produce sudden waterspouts. Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. Seek safe harbor immediately.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a

  • Special Marine Warning for:
    Coastal waters from Cape Fear NC to Little River Inlet SC out 20
    nm
    Coastal waters from Little River Inlet to Murrells Inlet SC out 20
    nm
    Coastal waters from Murrells Inlet to South Santee River SC out 20
    nm
    Waters from Little River Inlet to Murrells Inlet SC from 20 to 40
    nm
    Waters from Murrells Inlet NC to South Santee River SC from 20 to
    40 nm
  • Until 1000 AM EDT.
  • At 905 AM EDT, a line of showers and thunderstorms capable of
    producing waterspouts was located in the South Carolina offshore
    waters 20 to 30 miles east of Georgetown, Murrells Inlet, and
    Myrtle Beach, moving north at 30 knots.

    HAZARD: Waterspouts and wind gusts to 40 knots.

    SOURCE: Radar.

    IMPACT: Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally
    hazardous seas. Small craft could be damaged in briefly
    higher winds and suddenly higher waves.

  • Locations impacted include:
    Little River Offshore Reef, Myrtle Beach Rock, Little River Sea
    Buoy, Jungle, Little River Reef, Belky Bear, Sherman Wreck, Cherry
    Grove Inlet, Parking Lot Area, Bill Perry Junior Reef, Little River
    Entrance, and Goldfinch Reef.
